Last summer we suddenly found about 100 little black fish in the pond only about 40 made it through the winter i think the koi ate a lot of them lol but the ones that have look really big and healthy. Goldfish start out silver gray turn black then slowly the black starts to fade being replaced by light gold coloration. Although a picture would help ua to identify them for sure. However they were largely unknown in the west in recently.

Most koi and goldfish are born black so what you are seeing could very well be fry. Some baby koi fish species may not exhibit the colorful scales of older koi.
